Project Overview

The AMMO program project has provided risk management education programs to Eastern Washington wheat and barley producers, specifically targeted in Lincoln and Whitman counties. Workshop topics offered throughout the year were: understanding grain market basics; develop strategies to create a marketing plan; how to use financial records as management tools; understanding new governmental regulations, specifically environmental and transportation; how to manage per bushel input costs and capital purchases; utilizing crop insurance as a risk management tool; how to build a business plan; tools for communicating between generations, and issues surrounding succession planning. We utilized speakers from a variety of sources – university, local business, and even a grower-based panel. We offered 19 workshops and approximately 30% (90) of our 292 participants made changes in their farm management strategies as a direct result of their participation in one or more of our programs, with nearly 90% planning to make changes. We utilized an aggressive marketing plan including direct mail, paid advertising and word of mouth through the network of agricultural sponsors (AMMO) we have developed. Participation fees were charged for all workshops, to offset additional operating costs not covered by the grant.
