Project Overview
Kansas farms and ranches are owned and managed by an aging workforce. Some operations transition to the next generation with little outside help, however, a significant number fail to successfully implement a transition plan. This failure reveals itself in several forms including a substandard retirement for the aging operator, inadequate capitalization of the business for the succeeding generation, and sibling confrontation and disagreement. This project addresses these issues by providing one-on-one assistance to families needing facilitation and guidance with transition planning - before an event occurs. Educational opportunities are abundant in learning the steps necessary for handing over the business operation. Skilled facilitators are needed to assist those producers who hit roadblocks due to lack of financial-planning resources or existence of emotional confrontations. We worked with 43 producers who requested assistance in the transition process with 26 families making substantial progress in lowering their risk of transition failure.
