Project Overview

This project put together an easily accessible format for farmers interested in Quality Management Systems (QMS). Materials included Sample QMS plans, step by step directions and access to an online curriculum. The project provided training and awareness education for over 300 farmers. Producers participated in workshops and were given an overview of the online curriculum that would provide them with the QMS system to manage and mitigate risks associated with premium markets. There was also a "Train the Trainer" workshop which included governmental and university staff members. Those individuals learned the tenets of QMS and received workbooks of sample plans.

This QMS online curriculum was also made available on the Iowa State University Agricultural Management E-School (AMES) website, providing producers easy access to the curriculum.

An outcome of the project was that the we have developed partnerships with the ISU Animal Science Department for alternative delivery systems. They are making plans to do instate inservice training for thier livestock specialists, who will in turn work with the client to implemenent the developed materials.

Additionally, the National Pork Board and other similar groups are exploring the use of the QMS materials developed in this project.
