Project Overview
This project addressed the financial risks of farmers underserved by crop insurance by providing financial literacy training to historically underserved, small-scale, specialty, and organic producers selling directly to consumers and through local market channels in the Carolinas. Fifty-seven farmers attended a workshop about crop insurance, financial and production record-keeping, grant strategies, cost-share opportunities, risk management, recordkeeping, heirs' property, and enterprise crop budgets. Workshops were collaboratively taught by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, North Carolina State University, Clemson University, South Carolina Small Business Development Center, South Carolina Department of Agriculture, Matson Consulting, and Black Family Land Trust in North and South Carolina. Six farmers completed a financial benchmarking study and will use that information to make business and production decisions. One hundred farmers will view the Financial Benchmarking Report post-project period.
