Project Overview

Farm shops are a popular direct marketing outlet in the UK and Eastern US, but there are very few farm shops in the Intermountain West. The I-15 corridor provides access to over 20 national and state parks, and thus, is a prime area for tourism development, including farm shops. Tourists spend almost half of their travel budget on food and beverages, and thus provide a great market opportunity for producers. This project seeks to enhance the economic viability of small farms in the region by introducing opportunities to diversify markets, market outlets and product lines through farm shops and other extended season marketing opportunities. A curriculum on best practices and assessing the economic feasibility of extended season sales focused on the tourism market was developed and delivered through five workshops across Utah, Nevada, Montana, and Wyoming in 2015. All materials are available online at http://diverseag.org/htm/extended-season-marketing-opportunities.
