Project Overview
This project disseminated information on the risks (production and
price) associated with growing energy beets to potential new producers.
Energy beets can be used to produce a wide range of fuels, chemicals and
ethanol. Conventional sugar beets have been grown in North Dakota for
several decades in limited areas. The new genetically modified beets are
bred for high yield, high sugar content and are suited for a larger
array of North Dakota soils. This would greatly expand the growing
region.
Information was presented at five workshops on production practices, new technology risk alternatives and insurance with an attendance of 66. Also an overview was presented at four agricultural lenders meetings with attendance of 423. The economic downturn in the energy sector made this new enterprise unfeasible. We decided to not hold any more producer meetings because of poor attendance. It was unfortunate timing.
