Project Overview
The threat of wide-sweeping, rapid-burning wildfires has been
compounding exponentially in the West. Each year, tragic stories of
farmers’ faced with severe property, crop, livestock, labor and market
losses haunt our region. Farm-workers’ stories are far worse, with
limited language access, lack of resources and dependence on employers,
they are the most vulnerable actors during these devastating events. Now with COVID-19 disasters are more prominent then ever before.
Our
project aimed to reduce the human, legal and financial risks of
producers and their workforce. From three years of providing disaster
services we have developed strategies to protect the farming and
farm-worker community before, during and after a fire. We served 1041 Spanish speaking farmworkers through tailgate trainings in the North Bay and 7 Spanish speaking farmers in one-on-one trainings in the Salinas Valley of California. We developed a bilingual animation series and text-based disaster preparedness course to serve our community during the COVID-19 and Wildfires disasters
