Project Overview
This pilot project addressed the human resource needs of Michigan´s pork production systems while simultaneously addressing the skill needs of the area’s new entrants into the work force. The program also included displaced workers seeking new opportunities in an alternative career field. During an issues identification process, and in focus groups addressing human resource concerns, pork farms in Michigan had identified a specific need for trained prospective employees. MSU Extension, the Gratiot-Isabella Regional Education Service District, Schoolcraft Township, local school districts and area swine farms jointly facilitated a program that included experiential learning, a classroom component and nine to twelve weeks of on-the-job work experience for post high school participants interested in pork production. This program addressed the human resource needs of swine farms while at the same time participants, living in a geographical area with historically high unemployment, gained marketable skills and increased opportunity for employment.
