Project Overview
This project enabled new and established forest producers, including small farms and
ranches with forestland in five counties in southwestern Oregon (Coos,
Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine) to reduce production risks associated
with climate variability; specifically, risks of production losses or declines
from wildfire, drought, insects/diseases, and climate maladaptation.
Producers need a better understanding of tools and strategies to mitigate these
risks while sustaining forest productivity and profitability. This is
accentuated by the fact that rapid ownership turnover is resulting in many new
forest producers throughout the region.
The project delivered three workshops and a 6-part webinar series to help
landowners implement sound forest risk management strategies. Producers learned how to make timber stands
more resilient to fire and insect/disease damage, thus reducing production
losses, and how to better profit from by-products of forest health improvement
projects. We reached experienced
forest producers and beginning forest owners using proven social marketing
techniques via the innovative My Southern Oregon Woodlands (MSOW) program. In
addition to workshops and webinar series, project deliverables include peer mentor farm
visits coordinated via MSOW and development of a risk management plan template. We reached a total of 208 producers and land managers via workshops and mentor visits.
