Project Overview

Grain producers are faced with increasing challenges when making grain variety selection decisions. For wheat and corn producers, the variety selection decision has become increasing complicated with numerous new varieties available that are designed to address specific growing concerns. From the producer’s perspective, there are many risk factors to consider including future access to particular varieties, a variety’s susceptibility to disease or yield loss in specific growing conditions, and the economic risk involved in adopting new technologies. This project surveyed producers to help bring this information together and lay the foundation for the future development of multi-criteria decision support tool for wheat variety selection. The results showed an emphasis on yield, test weight, drought tolerance, and disease resistance, in that order. This information will be considered as the user interface and output screens are put together for the decision support tool that is currently under development.
