This program focused on teaching current and future beef cattle and sheep producers risk management offered by RMA namely, Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance, Pasture, Rangeland, Forage Insurance (PRF), Annual Forage insurance, and Whole-Farm Revenue Protection (WFRP) insurance. We focus on Beginning Farmers and Ranchers, which we define as producers beginning or soon to begin their careers with less than 10 years of experience.
Producers with less than 10 years of experience were targeted through ten (10) workshops developing risk management plans, two (2) single-day conferences (woman managing livestock conference and woman managing land), five (5) quarterly risk management webinars, and seventeen (17) livestock meetings focused on marketing and risk management. Producers soon to being their careers were targeted through three (3) youth risk management all-day events and three (3) post-university semester classes focusing on developing livestock risk management and marketing for operations they planned on returning to.
We reached 1,230 livestock producers, 536 youth, and 19 students returning to operations as a result of this project. Participants gained a better understanding of available risk management tools and valuable hands-on experience. This project met both current and future risk management needs for livestock producers in Nebraska and surrounding states.
