Project Overview
Sheep producers in California strive to be proactive and work with local, state and federal agencies, as well as private landowners, with the long term goals of benefiting and protecting the landscape of California and increasing their business enterprises through effective targeted grazing strategies. Our objective is to educate sheep producers and assist them in understanding and evaluating the legal and financial risks, as well as potential profitability, associated with adding grazing services to their sheep operations. CWGA will hold two workshops that will outline the benefits and risks, contracting and insurance requirements, ranch economics, costs and rates, and site evaluations involved in grazing services.
Workshop presenters included professionals with expertise in providing grazing services, developing contracts, insurance, and infrastructure requirements. Other presenters included private and public landowners/managers who are contracting with livestock producers to provide vegetation management, as well as producers currently engaged in this enterprise.
Our first workshop was well attended and well received. The second workshop was held March 21, 2011 and also included a new module on public relations. A third mini-workshop was presented during the CWGA convention, August 26, 2011.
