Project Overview

We offered a series of four workshops targeting local livestock producers that focused on identifying and managing risks in livestock finishing, direct market meat enterprises. Workshops focused on Business and Market Planning, Livestock Finishing and Meat Quality Risk, Business and Environmental Regulations, Animal Care Issues, and Food Safety, and Liability issues. This project was a collaboration between Washington State University Extension and CPOW Livestock Processors Co-op Association, a new custom livestock processing facility being constructed locally. Upon completion of this workshop series, participants had evaluated major risks inherent in a direct market meat business. Some went on to develop and implement plans to mitigate those risks. Several decided the reward from direct marketing was not worth the risk, and they laid aside plans to direct market meat from their livestock.
