Project Overview
Ohio is currently experiencing an oil and gas "boom" caused by accelerated interest in developing shale oil and gas resources in the state. Many farmland owners in Ohio face new and difficult decisions about shale oil and gas leasing, pipeline easements, water rights and tax liabilities. Additionally, these historically limited-resource farmers may gain more wealth from shale development than they have ever produced in their lifetimes; many are unprepared for wealth management decisionmaking. This project addressed the educational needs of these farmers by organizing a workshop featuring OSU Extension experts on shale development, leasing, pipelines, wealth management, tax management and water testing along with a display area on each topic where attendees could interact individually with workshop presenters. The workshops in Cambridge and Canfield, Ohio drew 139 attendees. Approximately 81 attendees reported that the information resulted in decision-making and adoption of strategies to reduce the financial, production and legal risks associated with shale gas development, including seeking professional assistance. A website containing resources resulting from this project is available at http://shalegas.osu.edu.
