Project Overview

Over forty ranch families in the Sandhills area of Nebraska avoided common obstacles to estate planning and took action. Too often participants leave Extension workshops with great intentions of changing behavior and following through with a management change, only to be engulfed in obstacles or overwhelmed by the task. Through a mix of incentive and support this project helped turn those great intentions into action. Participants were led through a four-step process that resulted in 26 families completing new estate transfer plans. Over 120 people increased their understanding of the importance of estate plans and the steps necessary to complete one by attending the initial workshops. The provided workbooks helped them initiate conversations and assemble documents. Over 40 families met with mediation counselors in individual work sessions to ask questions, clarify goals, and prepare to make the most of their two free grant supported meetings with project attorneys.
