Project Overview

This project utilized proactive producer education to address food safety liability that market garden producers encounter while direct marketing their product. It helped producers mitigate this risk through educational workshops, individual assessments, strategic planning, recordkeeping and implementing appropriate GAPs on their farms.
Initial workshops were held in two locations to increase regional participation. Information presented increased food safety and GAP awareness for 41 producers. Next, three on-farm workshops helped producers identify potential food safety risk by introducing them to producer practices and useful tools. Intensive training materials were distributed to these 48 producers. Online resources and training were made available to all participants to reinforce principles related to GAP implementation including recordkeeping and developing standard operating procedures. Nine producers took the eCornell online GAP course. Thirty one producers completed on-farm assessments, identified problem areas and implemented change. As the final step, 8 producers participated in a mock audit.
