Project Overview
Montana farm and ranch families face many challenges as they walk the tightrope between maintaining their family heritage and achieving their farm’s financial demands. Although the potential may exist to diversify income through value-added enterprises, producers often need help identifying their “specialty” and accessing the market opportunities that match the family and farm operation.
This project worked in a regional effort to organize local producers and help demonstrate and create yet a new market outlet for their fresh products. A series of workshops for producers in Billings in cooperation with Northern Plains Resource Counsel explained to both the general public and local producers how possible it is to organize marketing groups both to better local agriculture economies and to fill a demand for the general consumers needs. Producers then met together in marketing clubs to share their combined knowledge and experiences.
About 30 producers on average for the past 3 food drops participated. RC&D staff and NPRC facilitated the membership awarness and club development. RC&D staff will provide ongoing technical resources to clubs as requested.
Number of Participants: 30
