Project Overview
We concluded the record keeping project which was an expansion of the 2005-06 record keeping training project. Tribal outreach professionals and extension agents organized sessions for over 850 producers to learn to use a variety of record keeping tools, including record books and computer software. Local “computer training stations” were utilized so that outreach professionals could provide follow-up support to participants after the training workshops. Over 115 Navajos, Hualapais, Hopis and San Carlos Apache producers now have a record book on hand and have adopted a record keeping system for their operations as a result of the past and on going livestock record book trainings. There have been 135 additional Tribal members who have requested training. We continue to monitor livestock producers from other tribes and will implement/improve records systems as they feel comfortable, while at the same time helping them to track and evaluate animal health, production, and finances. Preliminary results from an assessment document provided us with useful information indicating that less than 50% of Navajo livestock producers have registered or know that it is a requirement of the Navajo Nation for livestock owners to have a premise ID number; hence there will be a continued need for livestock record keeping training, in conjunction with the current/on-going trainings associated with the national animal identification system.
