Through this project, 222 farmers in Minnesota and Wisconsin gained a greater understanding of the 11 essential legal and human risk management strategies for an effective farm workforce through a combination of reading project resources (a series of 1 overview guide, 11 tip sheets, and 4 comprehensive manuals), attending webinars, listening to podcasts, and taking an online workshop. 63 farmers analyzed their own legal vulnerabilities by taking our online course or attending a webinar. 3 farmers received individual consultations with the project attorney about their plans. As a result, 3 farmers modified employee classifications, 3 farmers purchased an appropriate insurance, 3 farmers modified work schedules and pay scales to comply with the law, 3 farmers came into alignment with tax law, and 3 farmers implemented protections against discrimination claims. Additionally, 1 farmer ceased usage of interns, apprentices, and volunteers, and 1 farmer complied with non-cash payment rules.
By addressing legal and human risks of employee management and communication, producers are better able to navigate an uncertain farm labor market. With access to clear, concise information, farmers selected the workforce options that work for them. With one-on-one support from an expert attorney, farmers implemented their plans and achieved risk reduction, quickly.
