Project Overview
Southwest Grassfed Livestock Alliance (SWGLA) and partners represent over 1,000 family ranches and farms in the four-corner states who are working towards sustainable livestock enterprises.
To improve family ranching viability in the southwest, SWGLA and partners targeted 120 participating family ranches and farms with 5 one-day workshops focused on entering and developing regional niche markets for their livestock products. The five workshops were “peer-driven” and co-instructed by Extension Services personnel and successful direct marketing peers. Workshops addressed improved use and understanding of 1) Marketing Plans, 2) Pricing, 3) Enterprise Diversification, 4) Financial Record Keeping, 5) Business Planning and 6) Cooperative Production/Marketing/Distribution. One workshop was held in conjunction with SWMN´s annual conference; 4 were held “in the field.”
Three additional tasting events were held in Capitan, NM, Santa Fe, NM and in Truth or Consequences, NM to help ranchers build relationships with potential customers in their respective regions and to enhance consumer awareness and demand for local/grassfed beef.
