Project Overview

The California Wool Growers Association provided opportunities to sheep producers for understanding and implementing programs that improved profitabilty.

Crop producers across the U.S. have several "Risk Management Tools" to utilize in order to minimize their financial risks. Until recently livestock producers have not had these same tools. Recently, programs have been developed which will provide sheep producers with opportunities to lower financial risks and consequently increase profitability. The Sheep Safety and Quality Assurance Program (SSQAP) and the Livestock Risk Protection Lamb Program (LRP-Lamb) are two of these "new" tools.

The SSQAP helps producers evaluate their production procedures to improve carcass quality. The LRP-Lamb provides "market price" protection.

The objective of this project was to provide mechanisms for sheep producers to understand and implement these two programs. This was accomplished by using written/web publications, three workshops and one-on-one consulting. The CWGA serves over 600 producers; 275 of these producers attended workshops, with 129 prodcuers completing a level one plane for their operations for SSQAP. Twenty five producers implemented one or both of the strategies presented.
