Project Overview

The program improved the sustainability of small ruminant producers in Kentucky by offering training at field days and distribution of materials related to improved production management, health care, and business planning.  The program helped fund the Small Ruminant Profit school where 56 producers were trained to increase productivity and avoid issues often seen by beginning producers.  The program also provided training on Holistic Management to mentors within the program, there were 6 individuals that took the training and worked with producers to improve overall planning to include a more sustainable approach to small ruminant management.  Through this program producers received training in parasite treatment and nutrition for both sheep and goats.  This has started to reduce death losses and improve reproduction though the total impact will not be seen until after the project as animals give birth and survival of the lambs and kids increase.
