Project Overview
This project addressed the human, financial and legal risks involved in transferring a farm to the next generation. Twelve family farms of various types and sizes attended the two, two-day workshops. Thirty-five people attended the first session on January 25 and 26, 2008. Thirty-one people attended the second session on February 15 and 16, 2008. The attendees included UW-River Falls students and alumni, their families, and other farm families from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Topics included communication, strategic planning, financial analysis, business planning and arrangements, retirement and estate planning, management skills, networking and team building. UWRF alumni that returned to their family´s farm shared their successes and failures in a panel discussion. Attendees developed improved communication skills, analyzed the financial ability of their farm to support multiple generations, and began developing succession plans. This project built upon the success of a similar program conducted on campus by UW-Extension in 2006.
