Project Overview
In recent years, Hawaii producers have faced adverse weather conditions caused by hurricanes and storms, the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, and drought. However, until disaster strikes, many farmers
throughout Hawaii are unaware of their risks nor the availability of crop and disaster insurance. Most do not have adequate farm records, making them ineligible to apply for financial assistance. Further, a majority of Cooperative Extension agents working directly with Hawaii’s insurable crops such as papaya, macadamia nut, coffee, banana, nursery, and livestock, are newly hired and/or had not previously been trained to address issues related to risk management and crop insurance. Online meetings addressed the geographical challenges of Hawaii faculty located on five different islands. Trained agents were then given access to additional educational tools in order to help further facilitation of risk management options to producers for both online and in person
delivery formats. Thus they are better prepared to build producers' awareness of crop insurance and other risk management tools as well as the five areas of risk. This project aimed to help Hawaii’s under served producers manage risk by building knowledge capacity among at least 10
Extension Agents with “Train the Trainer” (T3) webinars.
