Project Overview

This project was a collaborative effort involving both the Bitter Root Land Trust and the Ravalli County Right to Farm and Ranch Board. The project addressed legal, financial, and social issues that are risks to Ravalli County farm businesses arising from a lack of intergenerational communication and succession/estate plans. The project offered two workshops on family communication/goal-setting/planning as well as 4-8 hours of professional consultation with an attorney to refine, update, or begin an estate plan. Seventy-four participants attended one of two workshops. The workshops used a workbook approach to educate participants about the actions they can take to prepare themselves regarding their estates such as title and will review. Of those that attended the workshops 19 participants elected to take advantage of the consultation benefit. A follow-up survey revealed that four families were able to complete succession/estate plans and two families have a plan in progress.
