Project delivered production risk management education by
training farmers on how to incorporate crop insurance as a risk
management tool. Crop insurance programs covered included Florida avocados, fresh market tomatoes, ornamental plants and new insurance
options such as the whole farm revenue protection.
Recent events--droughts, hurricanes and floods--have renewed farmers' interest
in crop insurance. For this purpose a series of workshops
taught in English, and Spanish (total of 4 workshops) was offered to Tropical fruit, vegetable, and ornamental plants growers in
Miami Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.
Participants received training on understanding basics of crop insurance, estimating a crop insurance quote using the USDA RMA website, estimating an indemnity payment and using an excel tool to visualize the financial impact of a catastrophic event under different insurance scenarios. In total 56 growers participated in the workshop sessions, an additional number
of participants have accessed the online training material developed.
