Project Overview
Farm business succession is critical to the future of farming. It is estimated that over the next 10 years 500,000 farmers will retire. These farm families face financial, legal and human resource risks during the transition of the management and assets of the farming business. Families fear the transition will ruin family relationships as well as the business. Communication, goal setting, and the development and implementation of a succession plan can mitigate the risks and fear these families face. The objectives of this project were to encourage families to start their succession discussions and plans and offer education and assistance to the families. The project provided a total of ten producer workshops in five states. Michigan, Oklahoma, Kansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota participated in this program and reached approximately 125 farming families and saw 331 people participate in those five states.
