Project Overview
The project goal was to help farmers and ranchers understand the risks and commitment required to scale up their business to meet the demand of larger institutional markets. We attempted to accomplish this by 1)hosting three educational workshops (two in the Four Corners area and one in South Central New Mexico) 2)hosting a farm tour and 3)providing one-on-one technical assistance to producers, some of whom attended the trainings, others of whom did not.
60 producers participated in one or more aspects of the project, most of them were small or very small producers in the northwest, northern, and south central areas of New Mexico. Participants received training on increasing production, financial and marketing risks. Several producers were able to pursue new markets as a result of the trainings/technical assistance.
Through the project, a food safety handbook for small-scale producers was developed. It is being printed and distributed to producers throughout the state. We distributed approximately one hundred copies at the New Mexico Organic Farming Conference and through other venues.
Number of Participants: 60
