Project Overview
Over forty-five farm and ranch families in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Extension District avoided common obstacles to estate planning and took action. Rather than leaving the workshop with great intentions but failing to follow through, project participants took action. Through a mix of incentive and support, participants were led through a process that resulted in 30 families completing estate transfer plans.
Two hundred twenty six people participated in the seven workshops. Evaluations indicate that participants significantly better understand of the importance of an estate transfer plan, the importance of intergenerational communication, and the steps necessary to complete an estate transfer plan. They reported a 64% increase in knowledge of the key questions that should be answered when creating an estate plan. There was also an increase in participants desire to create a plan for the transfer of their assets. Ninety-one percent now understand the steps necessary to complete an estate transfer plan.
The provided workbooks helped them initiate conversations and assemble documents. Forty-five families also participated in Farm Finance Clinics conducted by Legal Aid of Nebraska in preparation for their free grant supported meeting with a project attorney.
