Project Overview
One hundred eighty-one Northeast shellfish farmers attended a workshop to learn the economic risks of shellfish farming, employee management, branding, marketing plans, and how to incorporate Best Management Practices into individual farm management plans. Nine workshops were held throughout the region (ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, DE, MD). The farmers were taught to evaluate and implement strategies and methodologies, record-keeping, and create farm management plans (FMPs), and a marketing brochure to increase market share and reduce/manage risk, especially with dead and dying shellfish. The program incorporated the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association's Best Management Practices (BMPs). The project team solicited workshop evaluations which indicated a high degree of appreciation for increased knowledge. Following the workshops, the team reached out five times to offer support for developing the FMPs and to ask for completed plans or brochures.
