Project Overview

This project addressed food safety-related legal liabilities and financial risks farms and ranches undertake in production and processing for direct markets. The 146 project participants were Inland Northwest farmers and ranchers producing and selling crops, livestock, and/or dairy products through direct and semi-direct markets (farm stands, farmersĀ“ markets, restaurants, caterers, etc.). Participants attended one of eight workshops on "Food Safety from Farm to Table" offered throughout the region. Upon workshop completion, 72 participants were able to assess plans for mitigating food safety risks related to production, processing and distribution to direct markets and 31 developed action plans to mitigate these risks. Participants now have knowledge of resources available to assist them in minimizing their legal and financial risks while protecting public health.
