Project Overview

This project addressed the interpersonal relationships and expectations of all family members dealing with the family farm, its operation, and succession to the next generations. Participants were from large, medium, and small family farm business operations in South Dakota. An eight hour workshop ws held on the topics of communication and interpersonal relationships, surfacing goals and expectations of family members (including how to set goals and possible consequences of divorce), and legal and financial needs and requirements involved in putting together a family plan. Individual assistance was available to each family if needed. Six months after the workshop, 28 families completed a plan of action and succession for the family farm.
