Project Overview
Small forest landowners in western Washington are facing increasing challenges to keeping their lands in forest use. Real estate pressures, complex changing regulations, and fluctuating market values for timber are causing many landowners to sell or develop their land, permanently removing it from forestry and the economic and environmental benefits forestland provides. This project, focusing on 120 landowners in the South Puget Sound region, utilized a series of five local hands-on workshops and direct technical assistance to increase understanding of sustainable forest management, markets for certified wood products, small scale manufacturing, and non-timber forest products. This knowledge allowed landowners to take advantage of current and emerging markets for forest products, thereby decreasing the financial risk of operations based solely on commodity timber markets. This project also hosted a website, email discussion group, and individual follow-up consultations that led to diversified revenue streams and improved forest management operations.
