Project Overview
Young Cattlemen Step 2 focused on two risk management areas; financial risk and human risk. The audience was beef producers in their 20´s and 30´s and their spouses. Sixty-eight producers and fourteen spouses participated.
Participants told us the most significant benefit to participating in this project was, “Networking with other producers and visiting other operations,” and “talking to other farmers and using their ideas to enhance my operation.”
Participants completed a basic business plan using the on-line version of AgPlan. The topics included understanding financial ratios and financial worksheets, using decision making tools such as the Ag Decision Maker spreadsheets, and business and succession planning. Other topics included forage management, pasture management, animal handling and facilities, and marketing tools. Speakers included Iowa Farm Bureau marketing specialist, Extension & USDA staff, participants, other producers, veterinarians, and second-generation farmers.
One participant said allowing us to use some risk management tools and also interact with other peers in the industry to compare thoughts and experiences was beneficial. Another said, “setting aside time to devote to the management side of the business motivates me to determine ways to improve my operation.”
