Project Overview
The Risk Mitigation project of the International Rescue Committee, Inc. in Phoenix (IRC) addressed risk mitigation for beginning farmers in Phoenix. This project assisted farmers in gaining knowledge and skills to mitigate risks by providing education on issues relating to insurance products, price issues relating to marketing, and legal issues relating to food safety liability, labor regulations and personal and business liability. Sixty-eight beginning farmers were targeted for this project. Farmers learned risk mitigation techniques through five ?modules on the risk management areas listed above with follow-up technical assistance from program staff. With the information learned, farmers reduced loss and increased total profits to improve economic viability. During these workshops the producers received access to resources, planning tools, information and direct service provision that helped them mitigate risk. Follow-up technical assistance helped farmers implement these practices on their farms, which resulted in an increase in production, reduction of loss and, consequently, increased revenue.
