Project Overview
This project’s objective was to increase the producer’s basic understanding of, and influences on owner’s equity. The program was presented in workshop and conference settings to crop and livestock producers in four Western states; Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming in 2004 and 2005 and again in Colorado in 2005 and 2006. The program material was based on the “Surviving in Agriculture” project developed by Duane Griffith at Montana State University. Twelve workshops were presented in Colorado from November 2004 through June 2006 after a no-cost extension was granted to extend the time period and increase contact numbers. The primary audience was producers who have been through the RightRisk simulation conducted through USDA-RMA Commodity Partnership Agreements. 270 participants left these workshops with an improved understanding of equity management, financial analysis, and an increased awareness of the long and short term financial effects of daily management decisions. The project investigators will survey ag lenders and program participants in the 2006-2007 fall and winter months as new Cooperative Extension programs are hosted with the intent of measuring continued behavioral changes in attitude toward management concepts taught. Material from this project has served as the basis for a new RightRisk scenario with emphasis on small grain marketing. A follow-up training module is in development to further enhance small grain marketing concepts.
