Project Overview
“Farmer Risk Management Rebound from COVID-19” supported 215 small, limited-resource, and beginning/new farmers to plan and implement marketing, financial, and production risk management strategies as they rebound from the disruptions caused by the pandemic. The project served Southern Appalachia/Western North Carolina (WNC). The project conducted 18 production workshops, 4 farmer-to-farmer sessions, one full-day training, a grower-buyer meeting, and 130 one-on-one assessment/coaching sessions. The all-day training included nine workshops - three marketing, three farm financial, and three on market outlets and enterprise diversification.The grower-buyer meeting was paired with the full day training to help farmers manage marketing risk, build connections with area buyers, and help farmers understand opportunities to expand into new markets. Addressing multiple aspects of risk management for small farm businesses with a variety of group training/networking, market connections, and one-on-ones gave this project a unique holistic approach.The combined expertise and partnerships of lead organization ASAP (Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project), NC Cooperative Extension, and the AB-Tech Small Business Center served to build the capacity of farmers to assess and manage farm risks and access new and existing resources. Tools and resources developed were shared widely through partner networks.
