Project Overview
Kansas farms and ranches are owned and managed by an aging workforce. Many operations transition to the next generation with little outside assistance, however a significant number fail to successfully implement a transition plan. This failure reveals itself in several forms including a substandard retirement for the aging operator, inadequate capitalization of the business for the succeeding generation, and sibling confrontation and disagreement. This project is proactively addressing these issues by providing educational workshops and one-on-one assistance to families through facilitation and guidance with planning of succession. Skilled facilitators assist those producers who encounter roadblocks either due to lack of financial-planning resources or existence of emotional confrontations which result in avoidance with planning. Over 100 producers participated in the workshops, with several families seeking the assistance of trained farm analysts. We anticipate all families will make substantial progress in lowering their risk of transition failure by participation in these workshops.
