Project Overview

Planning, communication and negotiation issues are common in farm/ranch transition transactions. Retiring farmers/ranchers rarely have transfer experience to guide them. This is a critical issue as farmers reach retirement age (24% are over age 65 in Nebraska). This project developed materials, conducted educational activities, and consulted with farmers/ranchers on transition strategies. Participants learned strategies to successfully enter or exit farming and met with advisors to clarify their specific situations. Seven publications were developed, four dedicated workshops were held plus invited presentations at several events (332 participants), and 28 consultations/interviews were held across Nebraska. We targeted retiring or senior farmers/ranchers who want to leave or share their farming involvement. We also targeted potential or beginning farmers/ranchers. The majority of responding participants demonstrated improved knowledge or skill in the topics presented. This project complemented other programs in Nebraska, and is transferable to other states.
