Project Overview

Our project enabled farmers to utilize an online course and field visit to learn and share long-term risk management strategies to climate change. Our project aimed to reduce both the production and financial risks of climate variability and the human risks of mentorship by creating an activity-driven learning community with 84 farmers throughout the state of California and Oregon. MESA's online learning platform for farmers allowed us to aggregate research and risk management strategies in a format that allows for collaboration and self-assessment. Small farmers in our networks utilized our 2-month online course and six webinars to build on-farm adaptive capacity to climate variability and engage their beginning farmer mentees. Through assignments, field roundtables, online evaluations, written action plans, farmer-to-farmer mentorship sessions and interviews, we verified that our participants have increased understanding of climate variability resilience and have implemented agroecological risk management strategies on their farms.
