Project Overview

We used a broad-based approach to risk management that incorporated price, financial, production, and human risk. Two existing Master Range Cattle Manager (MRCM) groups became Integrated Resource Management (IRM) learning communitites that met bimonthly for a year. All IRM participants hosted a ranch visit by team members during the project to provide one-on-one assistance. Our goal was for these groups to become self-sustaining, self-directed learning communities that function beyond the year of Risk Management support. One of the IRM learning communities has continued beyond the year. Additionally, we started 3 new MRCM groups in 3 locations: Martin, Winner, and Timber Lake. A portion of the curricula of both MRCM and IRM focused on ranch system-based planning and evaluation tools to assist risk-reducing management decisions, with the remainder of the curriculum determined by participants. These tools were used to provide context to manage risk in the overall ranch situation. The target audience was range-based beef cattle producers in western South Dakota.
