Project Overview
Public-land ranchers in the southwest face a unique set of risks including: 1) a variable and changing climate, 2) increased public use of shared resources, and 3) often strict or inflexible state and federal regulations. We built upon a previous WCRME project which provided experience in rangeland monitoring by: 1) continuing hands-on education, transitioning from “academic” workshops to those based more “in-the-field”, and 2) following up on field day training sessions with adaptive management scenario and risk mitigation experience. Our target audience, public-land ranchers and resource managers, grew from a core group known as the Rim Grass Range Group. This group formed independently and after participating in our previous project, specifically requested that in-the-field, hands-on training in range monitoring, adaptive management and risk mitigation continue. The popularity of our learning-by-doing effort resulted in expansion of the project to a larger area and participant base. Better informed and experienced rangeland resource and risk managers are now primed to gain and apply new rangeland risk management tools and extend that knowledge to their counterparts. We have initiated capturing this experience to create a preliminary rangeland virtual “game”.
