Project Overview
Our project’s core purpose was to enhance the economic viability and
wealth creation potential of farm enterprises owned by Native Americans
in the Pueblos of central and northern New Mexico, the Navajo Nation,
and surrounding communities.
The primary sources of risk faced
by emerging Native producers stem from crop selection (and low returns)
at farmers markets and institutional markets, both within Pueblo and
tribal communities and larger population centers. NMCC provided a series of 5 in-depth
training workshops to a total of 28 inter-tribal participants to
identify and mitigate risk in the mission-critical areas of marketing
and finance. We also co-hosted a regional buyer meetup networking event
and a farm tour to connect the cohorts and engage their families.
NMCC
leveraged the trust, momentum, and networks established with Native
farmers through related initiatives supported by USDA and the Native
American Agriculture Fund. With an ERME award, we developed and
delivered a “next level” technology-driven course with successful
outcomes.
