Project Overview
As many agricultural producers in the West are looking for ways to increase their profit margins while decreasing the risks associated with commodity price fluctuations, one strategy includes developing and marketing a product for a niche market. However, producing products for a consumer oriented niche market rather than a commodity market requires marketing and analytical skills to evaluate the viability of both market/production and business plans. The members of the Western Extension Marketing Committee jointly developed materials to address these issues with producers and then held workshops for producers in 6 different states in the West, followed by individual one-on-one consulting with participants to complete a market assessment and marketing plan. Over 900 copies of the curriculum were distributed in the Western US with 375 producers attending workshops and 13 producers completing marketing plans. The curriculum and parts thereof were requested 9,365 times from the WEMC website from June 2008 to April 2009. Additionally, 4,682 downloads of the materials were completed during the same time period.
