Project Overview

The project addressed financial risks arising from producer inability to 1) comply with regulation of the certified organic marketplace; and 2) enter the market for certified organic product. (Manage changes in policy and regulation, product and enterprise diversification, marketing strategies, direct wholesale and processing markets). The project consisted of four workshops: northern, eastern, southern and central New Mexico. Each training targeted producers of crops grown in that area. The trainings drew between 12 and 53 producers. Following the training participants understood how to apply for organic certification and how to keep the necessary records to maintain certification. Product-specific markets were investigated and producers developed target markets. Binders were given to participants with sample forms for all needed record-keeping areas, and a market-development manual that included sample invoices, etc.
