Project Overview
This project addressed the risks associated with specialty crop farming operations, specifically fresh market apple, berry and vegetable producers. This project expanded growers risk management skills by providing management information on a wide-range of risks impacting their operations. Participants were able to attend 11 different workshops, field days and a conference and could self-evaluate their ability to manage risk through a survey. Risk management information was incorporated into these events based on participant needs. Participants were asked to complete an action plan to address specific risk areas. Followup contacts were made with participating farmers to gauge progress and to help them complete their identified action steps.
748 farmers participated in educational sessions. Twenty-one participants filled out actual written action plans but approximately another 75 participants asked for some type of assistance via telephone call, email or conversation following the various educational event.
