Project Overview

Three workshops, with two days of programming each, were conducted in three locations along coastal California. These areas experience intense development pressures with extremely high real estate values making succession and estate planning essential for lands to remain in continual agricultural or timber production. The workshops served three areas: San Luis Obispo; Sonoma/Mendocino/Lake; and Humboldt/Del Norte Counties. These areas have some of the West´s most pristine beef, timber, dairy and farmlands for intensive vegetable, vine and flower production in sensitive environments. Landowners need to plan carefully to avoid parcelization by heirs and purchase by non-heirs who do not value the food and lumber production capabilities. California FarmLink and UCCE provided owners with ways to set up succession plans, find new business partners, add value to their operations and have hope for the future. A section on innovative labor management, including family labor, was also presented.
