Project Overview

Who will be raising cattle in the next 20-50 years? That concern has been identified by many in Iowa including County Extension Councils, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and Farm Bureau. There are a few programs for young farmers in general, but none that address the needs of the beef herd specifically.

This project targets cattle producers less than 40 years of age with the objectives of controlling risk through better production, financial and business management. The initial pilot began in December 2006 in eastern Iowa with about 20 participants meeting 5 times per year. This proposal will grow the existing group with more in-depth financial and risk management education, duplicate this effort to create a new group in another area and create a template for other specialists to follow. Each group will meet 4-5 times per year, utilizing workshops, field days, pasture walks and panel discussions.
