There is much more to farming than just growing crops. In the never ending push to manage
production issues and market perishable crops, legal risks are often overlooked. This is
particularly true of beginning, immigrant farmers who come from less regulated economies. In
California's highly regulated agriculture industry, neglect of legal concerns such as
environmental and labor law, food and worker safety, and lease compliance can spell major
trouble for nascent farms.
The Legal Risk Management Planning (LRMP) project developed and leveraged tools, presented a Legal Risk workshop series and provided technical assistance to help farmers achieve legal and business milestones.
LRMP improved beginning, socially-disadvantaged farmers' ability to minimize risk exposure and raise their economic viability. LRMP not only built the knowledge and reduced risk among ninety-five aspiring and existing farmers, it also helped to make our program more comprehensive and effective for future
participants.
