Project Overview

This project addressed the legal liabilities faced by small specialty farms with regard to food safety, especially beginning farmers.  New and small farmers feel overwhelmed by the rules and red tape associated with food safety. Before the project began, only two producers in Nevada were USDA GAP certified. Program participants were beginning or potential Nevada specialty crop farmers growing high- risk crops on a small scale. Participants attended a mock audit at one of five locations throughout the state.  After using tools received at the mock audit workshop, participants examined their own farms where four producers made changes in handling practices. Twenty producers received on-farm one-on-one mentoring to write and complete an individualized food safety plan including developing Standard Operating Procedures and receiving information on product liability insurance. Four producers in Nevada are USDA GAP certified as of December 31, 2015.
